The secret to reducing your energy bill!

26/04/2022

Are you concerned about the increasing cost of your electric and gas bills and what this may mean for your future savings? You may be able to reduce your energy bills by making some simple and practical changes to your home.

Increasing gas and electric bills can be a source of stress and frustration for most household owners due to the constant price increases. At Goldex Sales and Letting, we want to help make your home as energy-efficient as possible!

According to the BBC, millions of households in England, Scotland and Wales could be paying about £700 a year more for electricity and gas, following a price rise this month.

Generally, the highest amount of energy is used in the evening between 6-9pm, with the peak time being 8pm. We recognize that evenings are when we are using the most energy, but we believe that the small changes we can make - make a huge difference. A rapid effect can be obtained simply by turning off the light in a room when not in use, or by turning off a switch when not operating any appliances.

Follow our Goldex approved tips⬇️

Before you start. Try to understand your energy bill.  The information on a typical energy bill can be confusing, but understanding it can go a long way to helping you get to grips with your energy use at home.

👉Turn your lights off when you’re not using them or when you leave a room. This will save you around £20 a year on your annual energy bills. You can also switch your light bulbs to LED bulbs which will save you even more!

👉Install a smart thermostat; make sure to turn down thermostat while not at home.

👉You can save around £28 a year from your energy bill just by using your washing machine more carefully. Try putting your washing machine on a 30-degree cycle instead of higher temperatures.  Also, avoid the tumble dryer! Dry clothes on racks inside where possible or outside in warmer weather to save around £60 a year.

👉Spend less time in the shower, Keeping your shower time to just 4 minutes could save a typical household £70 a year on their energy bills.

👉Fill your dishwasher. Only run your dishwasher when it is full to reduce the amount of water you use. Reducing your dishwasher use by one run per week for a year could save you £14.

👉Turn off standby appliances. You can save around £55 a year just by remembering to turn your appliances off standby mode.

👉Draught proof your property. Unless your home is very new, you will lose some heat through draughts around doors and windows, gaps around the floor, or through the chimney. DIY draught proofing can be a cheap way to save monies on your energy bill.

With our simple cost-saving tips and tricks, you can see a huge difference in your monthly bills, giving you and your family more money to spend on the more enjoyable things in life.

What to do if you’re worried about your energy bills rising..

The price rise has been caused by an increase in wholesale gas prices (the amount that energy firms pay), which have seen a steep rise since October 2021. Gas prices have hit a record high as the world emerges from lockdown as well time as other economic factors having an impact.

This means that changes in wholesale prices are passed on to households through rising energy bills. The energy price cap only affects you if you live in England, Wales or Scotland.

What help is available for rising bills?

There are a few government schemes you may be eligible for to help soften the impact of increased costs of living.

£200 loan for energy customers

All domestic energy customers in England, Scotland and Wales will get £200 towards their bill in October 2022. Your energy supplier should add the discount to your account for you. However, you’ll pay back the £200 by paying an extra £40 a year on your annual bill for the next five years, starting from April 2023.

£150 Council Tax rebate

In April, all households in England on Council Tax bands A to D will receive a one-off £150 rebate on their Council Tax bill for that month. You won’t need to pay it back. You can check what band you are in on the GOV.UK website

If you’re paying by Direct Debit, the rebate should be automatically discounted from your April bill by your local authority. If you pay less than £150 a month, you’ll get the discount across two payments. If you don’t pay by Direct Debit, your council should start to process the discount from April.
